What kind of place should you book?

Town hotels and guesthouses

Weikersheim and the smaller towns of the valley have family-run hotels and guesthouses (Gasthof or Pension), often with a restaurant serving regional food and local wine.

Holiday flats

Holiday flats (Ferienwohnung) are popular in Germany and good value for families and longer stays. Many require a minimum stay of a few nights.

Wine estates and spa hotels

Some wine growers have guest rooms, and Bad Mergentheim has spa hotels with pools, saunas and treatments.

When to book, and what it costs

Prices in Weikersheim and the valley are moderate for most of the year. They are highest in Rothenburg in summer and during the Christmas market, and in Würzburg during big events.

Things to check before you book

  • Parking, and how far the hotel is from the old town
  • Bike storage, if you plan to cycle the Tauber valley
  • Whether breakfast is included
  • Arrival times, as small guesthouses may not have a 24-hour reception

Where to stay FAQ

Should I stay in Weikersheim or Rothenburg?

Stay in Weikersheim for calm, good value and the palace on your doorstep, and drive to Rothenburg early or late in the day. Stay in Rothenburg if you want to wake up inside the medieval walls and do not mind higher prices.

Do I need a car?

Not for Weikersheim, Bad Mergentheim and Würzburg, which are on the railway. A car makes it much easier to reach Rothenburg, Creglingen, Röttingen and the villages.

How far ahead should I book?

A few weeks ahead for most of the year. Book early for Rothenburg in summer and during the Christmas market, and for Würzburg during big events and trade fairs.

Is there a tourist tax?

Some towns charge a small tax per person per night, such as the spa tax (Kurtaxe) in Bad Mergentheim, which is usually paid at the hotel.
