The best time to visit Weikersheim, season by season

  • 2 min read

Weikersheim is lovely all year, but each season has its own character. The short answer: May to October is best for the palace garden, cycling and wine, and December for Christmas markets. Here is what to expect.

Spring: March to May

The valley turns green, fruit trees blossom and towns across the region decorate their fountains with painted eggs for Easter. The palace garden comes back to life, and the citrus trees and other potted plants are carried outside as the weather warms. Some sights and boat trips open for the season around Easter. It can still be cool and showery, so pack layers.

Summer: June to August

Long, warm days are perfect for the palace garden and the Tauber Valley Cycle Path. Summer brings opera and concerts at the palace, open-air theatre at Brattenstein Castle in Röttingen and wine festivals in the villages. It is also the busiest time in Rothenburg, so visit early or late in the day.

Autumn: September and October

For many people, this is the best time of all. The grapes are harvested, vineyards turn gold and red, and taverns serve onion tart with cloudy new wine. Days are often mild and sunny, and the crowds thin out after the summer holidays. See our guide to food and wine.

Winter: November to February

Winters are cold and often grey, sometimes with snow. Some sights have shorter hours, and the garden is quiet. But December brings Christmas markets, and Rothenburg’s is one of the most famous in Germany. Würzburg, Bad Mergentheim and Nuremberg have markets too.

Our pick

  • For the garden: late May to early September.
  • For cycling: May, June and September.
  • For wine and colours: September and October.
  • For Christmas markets: the weeks before Christmas, on weekdays if you can.

Tips

  • Book rooms early for summer weekends and December, especially in Rothenburg.
  • Check opening times in winter, when some sights close or open less often.
  • Start planning with our one-day itinerary.
