How to get to Weikersheim by train, car and plane

  • 1 min read

Weikersheim is a small town, but it is easy to reach. It has its own station on the Tauber valley railway, and it lies on the Romantic Road between Würzburg and Rothenburg. Here are the main ways to get there.

From Frankfurt

Frankfurt has the biggest international airport in Germany. By train, take a fast train from Frankfurt to Würzburg, then a regional train to Lauda and on along the Tauber valley line to Weikersheim, about 2½ to 3 hours in all. By car, it takes about 2 hours.

From Nuremberg

Nuremberg airport is the closest, about 1½ hours away by car. By train, you can travel via Würzburg and Lauda, or via Crailsheim at the other end of the Tauber valley line.

From Stuttgart and Munich

From Stuttgart, trains run to Crailsheim, where you change for the Tauber valley line to Weikersheim. By car, Stuttgart airport is about 1¾ hours away. From Munich, allow about 3 hours by car, or take a fast train to Würzburg and change there.

The Tauber valley railway

The regional line between Crailsheim and Lauda runs along the Tauber valley and stops at Weikersheim and Bad Mergentheim. Trains are simple but pleasant, with views of the vineyards, and they usually carry bikes. Check timetables and buy tickets on the Deutsche Bahn website or app.

By car

The A7 and A81 motorways both pass within about half an hour of Weikersheim. Follow the brown Romantic Road signs for the scenic route through the valley. Motorways are free for cars in Germany.

Getting around

  • On foot: the old town, the palace and the garden are all close together.
  • Train: to Bad Mergentheim, and to Würzburg with a change at Lauda.
  • Bike: the Tauber Valley Cycle Path runs through town.
  • Car: the easiest way to reach Rothenburg, Creglingen and the villages.
